Accident Benefits
Getting Back on Your Feet: How medical, rehabilitation and attendant care benefits help you recover.
3 minute read
From fender benders to more serious crashes, motor vehicle accidents happen every day across Ontario. When they do, it’s reassuring to know that support is already built into every auto insurance policy.
Medical, Rehabilitation and Attendant Care Benefits are automatically included in Ontario auto insurance coverage. These benefits are designed to help you recover, rebuild and return to your daily routine after an accident.
From medical treatment and therapy to home modifications and personal assistance, this coverage gives you access to the care you need — whether your recovery is brief or more complex.

Recovery for Every Level of Injury
Ontario auto insurance classifies injuries into three levels of severity: minor, non-catastrophic and catastrophic. Here’s how Medical, Rehabilitation and Attendant Care Benefits respond in each case:
Minor Injuries
If you suffer whiplash from a low-speed collision, Ontario’s Minor Injury Guideline (MIG) gives you up to $3,500 for treatments such as physiotherapy, chiropractic care and pain management to help with your recovery.
If you have a sprained back and need temporary help with dressing or getting around, Attendant Care Benefits usually don’t apply unless there are exceptional circumstances that take your injury outside of the MIG.
Non-Catastrophic Injuries
For more serious injuries — like a broken leg after being struck by a vehicle — Medical and Rehabilitation Benefits can provide up to $65,000 (shared with Attendant Care) to cover hospital care, therapy, mobility aids, transportation to medical appointments and more.
If you need help at home — for example, bathing or moving around after a fractured pelvis — Attendant Care Benefits ensure your essential daily tasks are managed while you focus on healing. This support is included within the same combined $65,000 limit. Optional upgrades can increase the coverage up to $130,000 or $1,000,000 for added peace of mind.
Catastrophic Injuries
Even in the most serious cases, meaningful support is available. For life-altering injuries — such as losing a limb or suffering a traumatic brain injury — you can access up to $1,000,000 for medical, rehabilitation and attendant care needs. This may include emergency treatment, prosthetics, home or vehicle modifications and 24/7 professional care. Optional upgrades can increase the benefit amount for even greater protection.
